Detects atypical behaviors with intrasegment alerts
When we talk about anti-money laundering (AML) prevention, it is not enough to compare behaviors across different customer segments. Often, the signals are hidden within the same group, where everyone should behave similarly.
That’s why we bring you Intrasegment Alerts, our new functionality in Pirani. In this article, we will explain what you can solve, the benefits it will bring to your company, and how you can visualize an alert.

What do we solve with Intrasegment Alerts?
Intrasegment alerts in Pirani allow for the detection of unusual behaviors within the same customer segment, meaning among those who share similar characteristics, such as the type of products purchased or transaction frequency.
Instead of comparing a customer with the entire database, these alerts analyze how a customer or counterparty behaves in relation to their own history within that specific segment. To do this, the analysis is conducted using a univariate approach, which means that only one variable of the customer is evaluated in relation to their past behavior and that of other customers within the same segment.
Thus, intrasegment alerts enable risk management teams to more easily detect anomalies within homogeneous customer groups, improving efficiency in management and reducing the likelihood of false positives.
What is the benefit for your company?
- Early detection of atypical behaviors
Detect unusual variations before they turn into major problems, such as fraud or money laundering activities. - Reduction of false positives
Since the alerts are based on a univariate model and predefined segmentation, false positives are reduced. This means the alerts generated are more relevant, focusing only on unusual behaviors within the same segment, thus avoiding unnecessary alarms for behaviors that do not represent a real risk. - Optimization of risk response
The ability to generate real-time alerts improves the speed of response to potential risks. Thanks to its ability to quickly detect deviations, intrasegment alerts allow for immediate action, minimizing potential damage and preventing serious consequences from undetected suspicious activities. - Improved regulatory compliance
Intrasegment alerts facilitate compliance with anti-money laundering and fraud regulations. By monitoring customer activities within their specific segments, the alerts ensure that any behavior deviating from the norm is efficiently detected, helping organizations stay aligned with regulatory requirements.
Advantages of having Intrasegment Alerts
- Greater flexibility and customization
Intrasegment alerts allow for adjusting monitoring rules based on the specific needs of each segment. You can define key variables that adapt to the characteristics of each customer group, ensuring that the alerts are personalized to the typical behaviors of that segment. - Optimization of resources
By reducing the number of irrelevant alerts and focusing only on deviations within the segment, intrasegment alerts allow risk teams to focus their resources on cases that truly require attention. This optimizes operational efficiency and enables quick, informed decision-making. - Improved strategic decision-making
With intrasegment alerts, risk analysts have access to detailed and accurate information about customer behavior within their segment. This visibility allows for better strategic decision-making, prioritizing cases that have the greatest impact on regulatory compliance and risk management. - Increased sensitivity to unusual behaviors
Intrasegment alerts allow for adjusting the sensitivity of the rules using statistical factors or standard formulas. This provides great flexibility in calibrating alerts according to the organization's needs, improving the detection of atypical behaviors without generating an overload of false alerts. - Adaptability to changes in customer behaviors
As customer segments evolve and their behaviors change, intrasegment alerts can adapt to these changes since the rules are based on historical, segmented data. This ensures the system remains relevant even as customer behavior patterns change over time.
How to view the Intrasegment Alert?
Once the intrasegment alert has been generated, you can view it within the "Alerts" module in Pirani. The alert will be displayed with the name you configured and will be classified as an automatic intrasegment alert, indicating that the customer’s behavior has deviated from the typical pattern within their segment.
When reviewing the alert's characteristics, you will be able to see:
- The type of alert that was triggered.
- The conditions applied, such as the type of comparison (statistical or standard formulas) and the sensitivity value.
- The moment the alert was triggered and under which parameters.
This will allow you to have a detailed analysis of why the alert was triggered and how it was adjusted to the customer's historical behavior within their segment.

For intrasegment alerts to work, it is necessary for the organization to acquire the Segmentation module, which is available in AML+ as an add-on.
